Description Scoring system used to describe the level of consciousness of a person. Used to gauge the severity of an acute brain injury.
Background The Glasgow Coma Scale was invented in 1974 by Graham Teasdale and Bryan J. Jennett, professors of neurosurgery at the University of Glasgow. It consists of three tests, Eyes, Verbal, and Motor, where scores for each test are assigned and summed to get an overall GCS score. Minimum score is 3 and maximum score is 15. The higher score indicates increased level of consciousness.
