Background Versions of the ECG have existed since 1887 and over time the bulky apparatus has been redesigned to compact electronic systems with computerized interpretations of the electrocardiogram. It has several uses based around obtaining information about the electrical function of the heart. Typically used when there is an indication of heart attack, arrhythmias, for medication monitoring, or during cardiac stress tests.
